Project Delta — RHEL Major-Version Migration Program

Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers being upgraded to a current major version

The challenge

Key personnel experience of SYNCXELL leadership; not a contract awarded to SYNCXELL LLC.

Enterprise Linux servers ran a mix of end-of-life Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases and CentOS. Unsupported operating systems no longer received security updates, and every upgrade had to be planned around production workloads and existing security baselines.

Our solution

Planned and ran a staged major-version migration program, from RHEL 6 through current releases up to RHEL 10, and converted CentOS systems to RHEL. In-place upgrades were used where Red Hat supports them and clean rebuilds where it does not. Red Hat Satellite managed content and patch lifecycle, Ansible automated the repetitive steps, and each wave was re-hardened against the applicable DISA STIG or CIS baseline before cutover.

The outcome

Servers moved to supported RHEL releases on a documented, repeatable upgrade path, and CentOS systems were brought under Red Hat subscription and support. Security baselines were re-applied at every step rather than left for the next audit.
